is, to the best of my knowledge, unfortunately the one they never put into production :(

They did, but they called it the RX-7...

At first I thought this was a joke about how the SLK is the best looking Miata lol

Is there a coupe version of a convertible sportscar that doesn’t look better?
I’m looking at you Jaguar.

I was going to crop in on just the Miata, but I thought it would be interesting to show the other things in a 22 year old magazine.
I did test a manual-transmission equipped SLK back when they were new, and despite being a German car snob at the time, I would have preferred a Miata even though it didn’t have the right name attached. I’ve since sworn off German cars and have become a big Mazda fan, something I wouldn’t have predicted 20+ years ago.

As long as it’s not a retractable hardtop. I’ve yet to see one of those that doesn’t have awkward, ungainly proportions when the top is up (not counting the Miata RF since that really doesn’t move the entire top)

BMW E93 looks the least awkward of the retractable roofs. A non enthusiast might even mistake it for a coupe.

Yeah I agree, Mercedes almost gets it right, BMWs are ok,
but most are awful.
The RF is full-tilt amazing. It just looks great from every angle.

Silly
Road and Tarvis
(pre-Tarvis). There is no hope, and no future.

What was so controversial about Acura’s 2.2CL coupe

You’re aware of course that Mazda did build a number of MX-5 coupes based on the NB?

Not technically “retractable”.
The Porsche Targa looks good

People want to crucify me for saying this, but I think the proportions on pre-993 911s are better in targa form...

Yeah, I’ve heard of those, but there’s something about the NB that just seems a little off in my eyes . It’s lacking the originality and cleanliness of the NA, and doesn’t seem to be as cohesive a design of the NC (despite that one looking kind of chunky thanks to Ford’s mandates).

I think you’re right. I like the roof line of the NA one better

I would agree with that. There’s something clean about that single rollover bar and a big wrap-around rear windscreen
